“It is time for Greece to stand on her feet once again” says commissioner Pierre Moscovici

The time has come for Greece to stand on its own two feet, EU Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs Pierre Moscovici said on Wednesday.

At a press conference on the Economic and Monetary Union ahead of the June summit meeting, Moscovici reviewed Greece’s progress since the start of the economic crisis and said the Eurogroup on Thursday must take the needed steps for the successful completion of the Greek programme, including debt sustainability.

Moscovici noted that Thursday’s Eurogroup meeting was of great significance for the Eurozone as a whole as well, as it wraps up the economic crisis in the area.

The commissioner noted that all 88 prior actions for the fourth and final review of the Greek programme had been fulfilled by Greece, and it was now the turn of its EU partners to meet their obligations.

Noting the “profound solidarity” expressed in funding to Greece since 2010 (241.6 billion euros from Eurozone states and 32.1 billion from the IMF), the unprecedented reforms the country had implemented and the impressive improvement of public finances, Moscovici nevertheless warned that Greece still had unresolved issues. Following the end of the fiscal programme, scheduled for August 20, he said, Greece must be placed under “enhanced surveillance” over progress on the debt and the reforms that are being gradually implemented in the near future.

The European Commission has stood by Greece from the start of the crisis and will help ensure that the new chapter opening for Greece will describe a success story, he said.
