Immigration, Brexit and eurozone reform to dominate this European Council’s agenda

The refugee and migration issue, Brexit and eurozone reform will be on the agenda of the European Council and Euro Summit meetings taking place on Thursday and Friday in Brussels.

At the Informal Refugee and Migration EU leaders’ workshop held last Sunday in Brussels, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had pointed out that the refugee and migration crisis is a collective European challenge and requires a European solution.

Tsipras has been against unilateral moves and a fragmentary approach to this issue because, as he said, that would create more problems, while he raised the issue of reuniting refugee families.

He also proposed a revision of the European asylum system, the upgrading of Frontex to a fully-fledged European Border and Coast Guard, as well as support for frontline, origin and transit countries.

At 12.30 pm, the Greek Prime Minister will participate in the PES Preparatory Session, where FYROM Prime Minister Zoran Zaev is also reportedly invited.

Zaev is expected to have a meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk.

At 15.00 Tsipras will participate in the European Council and at 19.30 he will attend the dinner of the EU heads of state and government.

On Friday, he will participate in the European Council’s working breakfast, which will discuss the application of Article 50 on Brexit, and at 11:15 he will take part in a Euro Summit roundtable on eurozone reform.
