Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias in Moscow: The two countries share a long diplomatic history




Greece and Russia have had diplomatic relations for the past 190 years, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said during the start of his meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday.

In a brief statement, Kotzias said that the first prime minister of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was formerly a foreign minister of Russia. Kotzias added that his visit to Moscow is taking place in the context of the Friendship Agreement between the two countries signed 25 years ago and wished Russia success at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia tournament.
On Wednesday afternoon Kotzias will be presented with an honorary doctorate at the State University of International Relations Moscow, and deliver a lecture on Greece’s foreign policy. In the evening he is scheduled to meet with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and Russia.
