Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis proclaims education and cultural programmes for prisons

Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis said Friday that educational and cultural programs offered at the country’s prisons will be strengthened, during a visit to a detention center in Chania, Crete.

Second chance schools will be boosted, as will the chance of gaining professional and technical training and programs runs by state cultural centers such as the National Opera, the State Theater, the minister said.

In Chania, Kontonis presented 22 of the prisoners with a certificate for taking part in a cooking training course. The minister pointed out that many of the prisoners have not been exposed to the programs currently being run in prisons.

“With these means, we want jails to become correctional facilities,” said the minister.
