Government spokesman: Greece returns to the markets, exits programme by August 2018

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos reiterated the government’s priorities on Friday in an interview with Alpha TV, saying its goal was to complete the Greek programme in August 2018 and return to the markets, having secured the best possible agreements on debt and post-programme surveillance.

“We are negotiating an exit from the programme,” he said, noting that Greece was bound by commitments to cut pensions in 2019 and the tax-free allowance in 2020.

Asked whether these measures will finally apply or whether the government will seek to renegotiate them, he said that priority must be on “completing the prior actions” so that the country can escape the crisis. “The rest is not part of what we are discussing with our lenders,” he added, stressing that any other discussion depends on the performance of the Greek economy.

Replying to a question on taxes and pensions, he noted that “the tax-free allowance concerns 2020. As for the pensions, I remind you that positive measures have also been adopted, in addition to cuts.”
