Commissioner Avramopoulos proposes establishment of permanent forum of SE countries

The establishment of a permanent forum of all the countries of Southeastern Europe, both members of the European Union and non-members, was proposed by Greek European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos during his speech at the Delphi Economic Forum on Friday.

As he said, the participants of such a forum can include the leadership of the member-countries, their political systems, the social partners, business associations and representatives, with a view to establishing a regular and ongoing dialogue to jointly address the major challenges facing the region and, more importantly, explore the common perspectives.

The aim is to work together to open a shared European highway that is common to all, where the fundamental values of United Europe act as a strong foundation for the evolution of the Balkan region into a model for coexistence, stability and solidarity for the entire world, so that the current leaderships of the countries in the region leave behind the greatest legacy for the generations to come, that of peace, stability, security and prosperity, Avramopoulos said.

“The Western Balkans are Europe. Historically, culturally, geographically. And of course our cooperation is not limited and will not be limited to migration and security. These are top issues, but they are not the only ones,” the Commissioner said, adding that ensuring stability and prosperity for the whole region requires:

– the consolidation of the principles of the rule of law,

– the fight against corruption,

– security for SMEs,

– improving the economy

– good neighbour relations.

“Therefore, the prospect of the Western Balkans’ future integration into the European Union should be accompanied by pledges for radical reforms,” he added.
