Prime Minister Tsipras to present Greece’s proposals for social Europe in Tallinn

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will present Greece’s proposals for a social Europe during the European Summit in Tallinn. An informal summit will be held on Thursday afternoon to discuss the EU programme up to the summer of 2018.

According to sources, Tsipras is expected to point to recent developments showing that the EU has been led to a political crisis due to its inability to deal effectively with the economic and migration crises in Europe, or to make its mark in global and regional developments.

The Greek prime minister will underline that this crisis has been expressed through Brexit, the rise of the far right and the centrifugal tendencies of countries that do not accept the need to show solidarity within the EU.

The prime minister will point out that the only way the political crisis can be tackled is to accept that the situation is not business as usual, and that there should be planning for meaningful initiatives by the summer in specific areas.

In the framework of the summit, Tsipras will present Greece’s proposals for a social Europe based on growth, rather than austerity, as well as a new Eurozone edifice. He will also underline that migration policy should be based on fair sharing of the burdens and effective combating of trafficking networks. Euro-Turkish relations will also be on the prime minister’s agenda.

The Digital Policy Summit will take place on Friday.
