IMF wants to specify measures on Greek debt relief to participate in program-spokesman

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) insists on specifying in advance the measures to restructure Greece’s public debt as a condition for its participation in the Greek program, even if they will be implemented later on, its spokesman Gerry Rice said on Thursday, during a regular press briefing.

Rice said the Greek program must be based on two parts: Brave reforms which will facilitate economic growth and debt relief. He said the Fund’s view hasn’t changed and was reiterated by its chief Christine Lagarde during her meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Rice said talks on debt will be able to start after the completion of the second program review adding that the Fund’s mission will return to Athens next week to focus on the fiscal reforms Greece needs to make.
