Greek American leaders going to Washington to meet US Ambassador Doherty

Leaders of the American Hellenic community will have a meeting on Monday in Washington with the US Ambassador to Cyprus Kathleen Doherty, who will be in Washington for the Christmas holidays.

Doherty will also have various meetings with US State Department officials.

The US government has not yet confirmed its participation to the conference on Cyprus that will convene in Geneva on January 12, next year.

However, well informed sources have said that the US expects an invitation from the UN Secretary General to attend the Conference and has in principle decided to be represented there by Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs covering Cyprus, Greece and Turkey, Jonathan Cohen.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci decided on December 1 to meet in Geneva on January 9, next year. On January 11 they will present their respective maps related to the territory chapter and on January 12 a Conference on Cyprus will be convened with the added participation of the guarantor powers, while other relevant parties shall be invited as needed.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
