Who will guarantee us (Cypriots) against our guarantor (Turkey)?

By Sener Levent

Can a murderer become a guarantor of anything? Are you really sure that the federal state can survive under such a guarantor?

You talk continuously about a guarantor. To whom will he be a guarantor? Which things will he guarantee? Exactly what will this guarantor guarantee? The security of the Turkish Cypriots, perhaps? Who will protect the Turkish Cypriots against a possible attack by the Greek Cypriots? Is this the only thing that you care about?

But, then, who will guarantee the non-dissolution of the would-be federal republic? Who will be her guarantor? Are you all sure that this new republic [that will spring from The Republic of Cyprus] will not dissolve? What will happen if she dissolves? This time both the north and the south of Cyprus will be left without a state.

As the current Republic of Cyprus will have vanished there will be no chance for anyone to return to the Republic of Cyprus. After all, this was the main aim of the Annan plan. This is why there was a clause in that plan for the dissolution of The Republic of Cyprus 24 hours after the two “yes” votes in the Greek and the Turkish Cypriot Communities. How can you be sure that their aim is not the same, now as then, and that their current plans are not as malicious, as then? The Turkish Cypriots must worry about the fate of the Republic of Cyprus just as much as the Greek Cypriots do. Because this republic belongs to all of her people, Turkish Cypriots as well as Greek Cypriots, alike. Have a look, for example, at our compatriots in the north part of Cyprus [occupied by the Turkish Army], who are suffocating from their becoming essentially a district of Turkey; these people consider the southern part of Cyprus as their refuge and dream of living there in the near future. The existence of the Republic of Cyprus means no imprisonment [of Cypriots] by Turkey. If what is taking place in Turkey has not affected this [northern] part of Cyprus so much, this is because of the existence of The Republic of Cyprus. We are Turkish-Cypriots and have in our pockets the identity cards of a ghost-state but our essential citizenship is that of a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus. As long as we are citizens of a member-state of the EU, the government of Ankara cannot do to us what she is doing in Turkey.

I do not know if a new agreement, that might emerge from the current talks, will guarantee the existence of the Republic of Cyprus against any dangers. That is, will we have a safe port to which we can take refuge in case the would-be federal state does not survive and disintegrates? Or will they lock us all into a Turkish hamam by merely telling us that this is the proper place for naked people? It is very difficult for anyone to say “yes” to an agreement that nullifies the Republic of Cyprus. Does perhaps Mr. Nicos Rolandis [retired Greek Cypriot politician], a fervent supporter of “a solution” to the Cyprus issue, have anything to say on the matter? He is right in his conclusions: the Greek Cypriot side was losing every time it said “no” to any proposed arrangement [for the Cyprus problem]. In every new proposed arrangement their red lines were receding just a little more. But, did the Greek Cypriots have any alternative except to say “no” and not risk losing everything that they had?

Have a look at the current state of affairs in Turkey, whose guarantees the Turkish Cypriot side is insisting on having for her own security. Turkey has turned into a plain hell: a state that is the enemy of all good people. It is suffering in the hands of pilgrims [hadjis], of hodjas, of exorcists, of forgers, of oppressors, and of rapists. There has remained not a single sign of free press or a just judiciary. Just the day before yesterday, they threw into jail the mayor of the city of Diyarbakir, Ms. Gultan Kisanak. After all, this is not the first time that Ms. Gultan has been arrested. She was actually thrown into the prison cells of Diyarbakir when she was only 18 years old, and there she suffered unbelievable torture. For six months she was locked in the doghouse for the dog of the prison commander. She described those days in one of her interviews:

“There was a major, Esat Oktay Gildiran, who was the prison commander. One day he came into the women’s cell. All of them stood up. I did not stand up. Simply because I did not stand up when he had entered the cell, simply and only for that reason alone, he put me in his dog’s house. It was a very small house, extremely filthy, into which not even his little dog wished to stay. I was kept there not just for one or two days, not just one month or two, but six whole months. I was beaten up daily in this little doghouse where it was difficult for one to even breathe, and I was subjected to all kinds of torture”.

The fascists of Turkey have a very special place among the fascists of this world. Now Turkey is ruled by people such as this prison commander. The police and the armed forces are run by fascists as well. This is the Turkey that we wish to put over our heads as our guarantor? Our security will be entrusted to a conservative state that subjects its own people to so much torture? We must be out of our minds. Can a murderer be a guarantor of anything? Are you really sure that the federal state can survive under such a guarantor?
