I can’t stay quiet any longer… Petition to declare ISIS’ massacres of religious minorities a Genocide

By Irene Antonoglu

I am a grandchild of two survivors of the genocide suffered by Greeks living in Asia Minor. My grandfather Yianni survived a death march, and my grandmother Irini was able to escape Smyrna before it was burned down.

It pains me to think of what they had to go through. It pains me even more when I read the accounts of people and countries that stood by and let these historic communities literally be slaughtered and wiped out.

That is why today – after hearing “Never Again” my entire life, after learning of Genocide conventions and the “duty to protect” – I am more upset than ever. People and countries are once again standing by as another historic community, the Christians of the Middle East, are targeted for extinction by ISIS. Amazingly, there is a debate as to whether ISIS’s actions constitute genocide.

I have always been a proud member of HALC, and in memory of my grandparents, I am proud that HALC is standing with A Demand for Action, the Armenian National Committee of America and others demanding that the Obama Administration classify ISIS’s murderous rampage a Genocide, and thus give its victims a chance to fight back and survive.

Please join me and sign this letter to President Obama. Let the world know that when we utter “Never Again”, we mean it:

Petition to declare ISIS’ massacres of religious minorities a Genocide

Christians in Iraq and Syria are being raped, tortured or killed on a daily basis by the terrorist group ISIS as it attempts to establish a purely Islamic caliphate in the region. It’s reported that the Obama administration is set to declare that the mass murder of some non-Christian minorities in the region constitute a genocide, but that it is reluctant to issue the same determination that the murder of Christians.

Please, sign on to our letter to President Obama asking that his administration acknowledge the reality of a Christian genocide in the Middle East.

The petition will be delivered to David N. Saperstein, the US’ Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom on International Religious Freedom Day (January 16th).

Dear Mr. President,

We write to you requesting that you declare the mass murder of Christians at the hands of ISIS in Iraq and Syria a genocide.

Recent news reports suggest that your administration is set to determine that ISIS killings of Yazidis constitute a genocide, but that you are hesitant to grant the same genocide categorization to the killing of Christian and other minorities in the region. We urge you to classify the mass murder of Yazidis, Christians, and other religious minorities a gencoide.

The evidence is clear that ISIS is intent on eradicating the already dwindling populations of Christians in Iraq and Syria. ISIS has made no secret of its agenda in establishing a purely Islamic Caliphate in the region, devoid of any inkling of Christian or minority religious populations.

Earlier this year, members of The International Association of Genocide Scholars wrote to Congress explaining that “ISIS’ mass murders of Chaldean, Assyrian, Melkite Greek, and Coptic Christians, Yazidis, Shia Muslims, Sunni Kurds and other religious groups meet even the strictest definition of genocide.”

Every day, we read about the horrific acts of rape, torture and mass murder Christians suffer at the hands of ISIS. If ISIS’s systematic eradication of Christian minorities in the region isn’t a genocide, what is?

We urgently request that your administration publicly acknowledge the genocide being perpetrated by ISIS against Yazidis, Christians, and other religious minorities. The potential victims of ISIS’s genocidal campaign cannot wait any longer.

Thank you
