Greece and Albania will conclude their agreement “with a new document of strategic partnership,” Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama told the Athens-Macedonia News Agency (ANA) on the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans Summit concluding in London on Tuesday.
Greece’s role in FYROM and Albania’s EU accession proceedings is determinant, stated Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Saturday in his address to the SYRIZA central committee.
“Changes that happen in the world lead us to the conclusion that we must intensify and deepen our cooperation in the region of Southeastern Europe,” Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said on Friday during his opening speech at the 3rd Ministerial Meeting of Greece, Albania, Bulgaria and FYROM, held in Thessaloniki.
Greece is now on the final stretch to achieving the goal that brought the government to power; an exit from strict surveillance and the end of the memoranda, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Tuesday during his opening speech at the cabinet meeting.
Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias began a round of meetings on Monday with the leaders of opposition political parties in order to brief them on the latest developments regarding the issue of FYROM’s name.
Greece’s foreign ministry strongly rejected claims by Albanian officials on Monday that the issue of Cham Albanians is being discussed between Greece and Albania as part of the bilateral talks to resolve open issues between the two countries.
The remains of four Greeks who fought on the Albanian front in 1940 were located on Tuesday in the village of Dragoti, according to Albanian sources.
