Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the developments in the Middle East in his Sunday post on the internet.

“I want to start with the Greek government’s clear and unequivocal condemnation of Iran’s attack against Israel last night. These are extremely unpleasant and very worrying developments that are sparking a new conflagration in our wider neighborhood and of course in the Middle East. The National Security Governmental Council (KYSEA) will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday at 18:00 to assess the situation and to declare in every way our support for every effort to defuse the new tension”, Mitsotakis said.

“Furthermore, a thought: although we are still halfway through April, unfortunately the “dance” of fires has begun in many areas of the country,” he underlined adding that “121 wildfires broke up in twelve hours and the Fire Brigade addressed them with the new doctrine of attacking forest fires. In several cases, the cause seems to have been arson by negligence, arrests were made and administrative fines were imposed. But the point is that negligence causes the same devastating results as arson. That is why a lot of attention is needed from farmers and those who deal with the land during this time. The fires in Ierapetra and Pieria mountains at an altitude of 1800 meters in April were dealt with in 1 and 3 days respectively, but they showed how difficult this year’s firefighting season will be and that the help of the whole society is needed to reduce the effects of the climate crisis”.
