Greek-Turkish relations have imporoved lately, which is a necessary prerequisite for the EU-Türkiye relationship to move forward, Greek Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis said before the start of the informal meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers (Gymnich) in Brussels on Saturday.

“Greece always supports the European path of Türkiye. It is in the interests of both the European Union and of stability in the wider region of the East Mediterranean,” the FM said. “Turkiye must, of course, recognize the issues that European Union member-states are highly sensitive to. There must, particularly, be obvious proof that there is willingenss to continue dialog for the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions. Greece will be present in this process.”

Gerapetritis added, “Relations between Greece and Türkiye have improved lately. It is a necessary prerequisite to allow the EU-Turkish relationship to move forward. On the other hand, there must be constant proof that there is a willingness on Türkiye’s side as well to improve EU-Turkish relations, always within the boundaries of the European acquis.”

The Greek minister said that besides EU-Turkish relations, the Gymnich meeting would discuss, and hopefully conclude on, the issue of support to Ukraine, to the institutions in Africa, and a way to end conflicts in the Middle East through substantial discussion for a permanent solution.

“The European Union ought to be present in great crises, and must be able to handle large issues people are worried about in a united manner,” Gerapetritis concluded.
