Bill on same-sex marriage is tabled in parliament

The bill by State Minister Akis Skertsos on “Equality in civil marriage, revision of the Civil Code, and other regulations” was tabled in parliament on Thursday night.

The controversial bill had been posted for public consultation until Wednesday (Jan. 31).

An accompanying document said the proposed law foresees guaranteeing the principle of equality by extending the possibility of  marriage between members of the same sex, and the strengthening of protection from discrimination in the direction of implementing the National Strategy of Equality for LGBTQI.

The bill includes the following: a) amendment of the Civil Code in order to recognize the possibility of same-sex marriage, b) necessary interventions in labor legislation to protect same-sex spouses and parents, c) expanding the protection from discrimination, and d) more specific regulation of relations with elements of foreign citizenship.
