Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance in an announcement on Tuesday said that “the fine words and the congratulations that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis exchanged with EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson  on Monday in Athens, can’t cover the cruel reality regarding the European Migration and Asylum Treaty and the management of the migration issue in the Aegean. According to the Treaty, the state members that do not want asylum requests will be able, especially in periods of crisis, to become sponsors of the countries that are at the EU’s external borders, as for example Greece, in order to host them there. In parallel, despite the big statements, there was no provision for the support of legal and safe migration corridors according to UN Treaty that was signed in Marrakesh or for a strong European return mechanism for those that are not entitled to asylum”.

The main opposition also said that it continues to strive for a European policy that will fairly and with solidarity distribute among the EU state members the responsibility for the management of the refugees issues and will be based on the protection of the borders with respect to the international law. “We will not ratify the role that Greece voluntarily accepts, that of the guard of that assumes all the responsibilities, legal, operational, hosting, of the rest EU member states, with very serious consequences for the country’s interests and values”, SYRIZA-PA concluded.
