Dimitris Mantzos, the parliamentary spokesperson of opposition PASOK-Movement of Change, in a comment on Friday about the Turkish president’s visit to Athens the previous day, pointed out that the existence and confirmation of open channels of communication with Turkiye is a positive and necessary step.

“It is in this light and with the criterion of inclusion in a long-term national strategy that we view the signing of a Declaration between the Greek prime minister and the Turkish president,” Mantzos said.

He added that “the essence is always behind the photos and formal statements: In the text of the agreement, whether this is binding, and whether its general wording allows for different interpretations.”

Mantzos also emphasised that “building trust requires practical progress and not just statements – as was demonstrated by Erdogan’s attempt to refer to a ‘Turkish’ and not a Muslim minority.”
