Polling stations opened for the second round of local gov’t elections

The polling stations opened at 07:00 on Sunday for the second and final round of Greece’s local government elections.

Voting will take place in the country’s regions and municipalities where no single party candidate – or coalition of candidates – managed to surpass the required 43% threshold of votes.

  • The participation of voters in the second round of the local government elections on Sunday reached 23.1 percent at 14:30 against 30.8 percent the previous Sunday (first round of the elections, Deputy Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios announced.

    According to the ministry’s announcement, roughly 1,308,000 citizens from 80 percent of the polling stations have voted so far.

Of the country’s 13 regions only 7 elected a regional governor in the first round of the elections on October 8, while only 248 municipalities elected mayors out of the 332 municipalities total.
Therefore, on Sunday local government elections will be carried out in 6 regions and 84 municipalities across Greece, including Athens and 27 municipalities in Attica, Thessaloniki, Patras in northern Peloponnese and Ioannina in northern Greece.

The polling stations will close at 19:00 on Sunday
