The crucial cooperation of the MED5 for the effective management of migration and the “historic agreement” signed last Wednesday, in Brussels, towards the final stretch for the Pact on Migration and Asylum, was underlined – among others – by the vice-president of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, opening on Saturday the proceedings of the MED5 ministerial conference in Thessaloniki.

The cooperation of the MED5 group is getting stronger proving that the work done at this level is of crucial importance not only for the Mediterranean front of our Union but for the whole of it, Schinas said and added: “After many years, the Mediterranean south of Europe does not follow the events but leads them […] And it has proven that it is a partner, on which the European Union can rely on.”

Regarding last Wednesday’s agreement in Brussels, Schinas said that it was a historic moment as for the first time we have a firm agreement on the Pact on Asylum and Migration. “It’s a now or never moment” for the Pact, he said and underlined its importance by saying that we need this system, firmly established in EU law, properly supported by financial and operational means and enforceable by the Commission and the European Court of Justice.

The MED5 group has been telling the EU for a long time that migration is a European responsibility and not a national one and it is absolutely right, Schinas said, expressing the belief that there will be ratification of the Pact within the first months of 2024.
