The bodies of two more migrants were recovered by the Hellenic Coast Guard on Monday, near where a fishing boat full of migrants capsized last week, raising the death toll from 78 to 80.

The two bodies were transferred to the port city of Kalamata, which is where the 104 survivors received emergency humanitarian and medical care before 71 of them were transferred to a special facility in Malakassa, north Attica, last Friday.

  • Search operations continued on Monday by a navy frigate and another three ships, assisted by a coast guard helicopter and one of its aircraft.

The fishing vessel capsized in international waters last Wednesday, 47 nautical miles off Pylos, southwestern Peloponnese. Media reports had claimed that up to 700 people were likely riding on the overcrowded boat, with women and children allegedly kept in the hold.
