The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Tuesday received Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is paying a visit to Greece, at the Presidential Mansion.

Sakellaropoulou underlined the importance of cooperation for the resolution of open issues, including the issue of the maritime zones, based on the international law and good neighbourly relations, in a manner that befits two democratic and neighbouring countries and future partners in EU.

She also noted that Greece remains a stable supporter of the European prospects of the Western Balkans, expressing her certainty that Albania will rapidly meet the requirements needed in order to become full member of the EU.

She also highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of the ethnic Greek minority in Albania, saying that the members of the Greek minority and the members of the Albanian community in Greece act as a bridge of cooperation between the two countries.

On his part, Rama said that Greece constitutes an example for all in the region and an advocate for the Western Balkans in EU. He expressed his satisfaction over the friendly relations between the two peoples, adding that the agreement to have recourse to the Hague over the delimitation of the maritime zones proves Albania and Greece’s will to resolve the bilateral issues.

He agreed with the President on the importance of the ethnic Greek minority in Albania and of the Albanian community in Greece, pointing out that the strong ties between the two countries are also due to them.

Finally, Rama expressed his condolences for the tragic train accident in Tempi.
