Greece must have “a serious and stable government” in order to continue the work of driving down unemployment, which has fallen from 17.5 pct to 11.5 pct in 3.5 years, Labour Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said at the Economist Conference on “Europe: the new era for skills – Greece: the human dynamic in the new workplace and society” held in Athens on Friday.

He stressed that this was essential in order to create new jobs, address imbalances in the job market, carry out reforms and reduce the “skills gap” in the workforce, adding that this will benefit workers as much as the unemployed.

Hatzidakis identified four factors contributing to the “skills shortage”, including workers shunning certain kinds of jobs, such as farm work, or preferring to remain on unemployment registers for the associated benefits, as well as a need for employers to offer higher salaries and a lack of skills training, which had not been sufficiently funded in Greece.

The minister said that a law established in 2022 was designed to direct funds from the RRF and NSRF to this end, linking the pay of trainers and trainees with the results of vocational training, as well as steps to get universities involved in the process and launching partnerships with global giants such as Google, Amazon, Cisco and Microsoft.

“In total, more than 700,000 workers and unemployed will participate in training and retraining programmes financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund and the NSRF in the coming years, with emphasis on green and digital skills,” he said.

On remote working trends following the pandemic, Hatzidakis said this had permitted Greeks to work for employers abroad while returning or remaining in Greece and he stressed that Greek businesses will have to pay better salaries if they want to attract these workers.
