Opposition PASOK-Movement for Change spokesperson Dimitris Mantzos stated his party’s goals with respect to the attempts to tap the mobile phone of the party’s leader, Nikos Androulakis, in an interview with the public broadcaster ERT on Monday.

“On the one hand, that there be an investigation to find those responsible and to lead before Justice those responsible for the constitutional choice of monitoring and the attempted tapping of Nikos Androulakis’ cellphone and, on the other hand, for a debate to begin, with the participation of all the political forces, on the legislative protection of the country so that antidemocratic phenoma of this kind do not reappear in the future,” he said.

He added that the “issue was highlighted in its true dimensions not only inside the country but also abroad. All the media worldwide are talking about the shadows over Athens and over Greece in terms of the phone-tapping of political opponents and journalists and this is something very serious”.

Iliopoulos: PM Mitsotakis will come to parliament to explain himself

Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson Nassos Iliopoulos said that “Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will come to parliament to explain himself. He is clearly responsible for the phone-tapping”, while speaking to Real FM on Monday.

He said that Mitsotakis had admitted that there was political responsibility and, even though the prime minister’s general secretary and the head of the National Intelligence Service had been removed, it made no sense to assert that Mitsotakis, who had actively sought their appointment and even changed the law to make it possible, bore no responsibility.

Iliopoulos said that his party was waiting for clear answers in parliament. “Which agencies leased the malware Predator and who are the political figures that are being tapped”.

He claimed that Mitsotakis should resign and call general elections, adding “that would be the normal thing to do in any European country.”

Iliopoulos also said that obviously SYRIZA-PA will support the setting up of a parliamentary investigation committee.
