State to spend 2.0 billion euros to support households, enterprises in September, Finance Minister Staikouras says

State assistance for households and businesses faced with high electricity bills will total two billion euros in September, Finance Minister Christos Staikouras announced while speaking to Real FM radio on Monday.

He also revealed that dozens of measures “are on the table” for the economic package to be announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) but final decisions will depend on the available fiscal space and the government’s priorities.

The minister said that household incomes have been boosted through lower unemployment, increased revenues from tourism, continued investments and an increase in the minimum wage. With regard to the payment of taxes, he said that Greeks were managing to pay the amounts owed without a fall in deposits.

This good performance was being offset by high inflation and problems in the energy sector, where the state had set up lines of defence to support households and enterprises, he added.

According to Staikouras, the final decisions will depend chiefly on the rate of GDP growth in the second quarter of 2022, tax revenues in August and revenues from tourism in July and August.
