Congressman Smith issued a July 8 statement, “On Biden’s unconscionable support for selling F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits to Turkey,” in which he cited Turkey’s many malign activities, including its continued occupation of Cyprus and violations of Greek airspace.

The congressman has important influence over potential sale of F-16s to Turkey given his senior role on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over arms sales.

AHI has worked closely with Congressman Smith over the years. During this year’s AHI Congressional Salute to Greek Independence Day, Congressman Smith stated, “Thank you [AHI] for your leadership, which has been absolutely extraordinary. You really help to keep all of us on Capitol Hill far better informed than we otherwise would be, and motivated.”

“I first met Congressman Smith as a student at the College of New Jersey (now Trenton State), of which he is also an alumnus. He was a man of principle then and is a man of principle now. It has been an honor for AHI to have worked closely with Congressman Smith and his staff, especially Senior Policy Adviser Piero Tozzi.

Congressman Smith has played a leading role in supporting U.S.-Greece, U.S.-Cyprus relations, the rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, as well as holding Turkey accountable.

As a result, the Greek American community of New Jersey awarded Congressman Smith the “2017 Alexander the Great Public Service Award.”

I want to thank Congressman Smith for his exceptional leadership and look forward to continued collaboration on areas of mutual interest.”
