The head of the appeals court public prosecution department Maria Gane on Thursday ordered an urgent public prosecutor’s inquiry into the fires that began on Tuesday in Penteli and then spread to the nearby areas of Anthousa, Gerakas and Pallini, as well as the fire that started in Megara on Wednesday.

Gane has instructed the first-instance court prosecution department to conduct a preliminary investigation to determine whether there is criminal liability for the fires that destroyed hundreds of hectares of forest, farmland and private property.

Among others, she has asked that it examine whether crimes of arson and violations of the laws for the protection of the environment have been committed.

The investigation will be carried out by a public prosecutor who will examine the evidence concerning both Attica fires in detail and determine whether this points to responsibility by specific individuals.
