The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in a post on Facebook on Monday, referred to the US Supreme Court’s decision that reversed Roe vs Wade, after five decades, rolling back abortion rights.

She said it was an open cultural clash in the already divided USA, with wider social and political repercussions.

According to the president, this decision “places at the discretion of the lawmaker an emblematic conquest of women and a fundamental approach to their personal independence,” adding that “an issue that historically and in principle is at the core of individual human rights unacceptably goes back to being connected with the moment and the net power of the majority, depending on its ideological and moral prejudice”.

Sakellaropoulou also underlined that “between the lines of the Supreme Court’s decision and the method of grammatical or historical interpretation of the US Constitution is concealed the ominous political and cultural revisionism of our era in its most symbolic legal expression”.
