One person was injured after a powerful explosion that sparked a fire in a building in central Athens on Wednesday.

A 78-year-old man has been taken to Laiko Hospital.

Police have stopped traffic in the area.

Buildings within a radius of up to 200 metres have suffered damage as a result of the powerful explosion that rocked the six-storey building at 3 Syggrou Avenue.

According to the Fire Brigade, the most probable cause of the explosion is a gas leak, either from an LPG canister or natural gas connection.

The explosion occurred on the mezzanine floor of the building, which is a place of residence, while the rest of the building, according to the same information, is not inhabited as apartments were undergoing restoration to be rented out.

Eighteen firefighters with six fire engines immediately responded and contained the fire.

However, the shockwave from the strong blast severely damaged the entire building, on the ground floor of which there is a store with organic products, as well as the buildings opposite and on either side. Windows were broken at a distance of 200 metres, in buildings and in two cars, while adjacent buildings also suffered structural damage.
