The plans of the United States for Alexandroupolis are not a threat to Turkey, US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt underlined on Thursday, while speaking at the Thessaloniki Summit 2021.

The Summit was organised by the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises and the Delphi Economic Forum in Thessaloniki on Thursday and Friday, under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Asked to comment on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s reaction to the US plans for Alexandroupolis, Pyatt underlined that the partnership between USA and Greece in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace “was not a threat to Turkey”.

Referring to the defence agreement and the strategic dialogue between the US and Greece, Pyatt said that bilateral relations were “at a peak, but they are not at the summit.” He also underlined that the US considers Greece a country with which it shares common strategic interests.

Pyatt also referred to the ‘excellent progress’ during his term in Greece: “I am very proud of the progress of the last five years in bilateral relations and of Greece’s progress,” he said, noting that the US will continue to invest in Greece and in the bilateral relations of the two countries.
