Cyprus will deal with Turkish threats in the best possible diplomatic way, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said, pointing out that the EU shows interest in the issue.

President Anastasiades, who was arriving at the 17th annual Cyprus Summit, in Nicosia, was replying to a journalist`s comment that there is a delay on the part of Brussels to react to Turkey`s provocations against Cyprus.

The European side is interested, he said, adding that “as you know a briefing report on the basis of the information service, which records what unfortunately has taken place or is taking place, will be discussed next week.”

“Certainly, the threats on the part of Turkey are taken into consideration and will be dealt with in the best possible diplomatic way,” he noted.

Replying to a question about the minutes of the Crans Montana Conference on Cyprus published by daily newspaper “Phileleftheros” he said that that “I did what I had to do, to be constructive, creative, in order to reach a solution which would have been acceptable by both communities.”

The issue of Security, President Anastasiades said, was first raised following our actions, adding that it had never before been discussed and it is well known that following a meeting with (UN) Secretary General on June 4, 2017 the important statement referring to an anachronistic guarantees system and the need to find another way to provide security if necessary, was made.”

Therefore, he noted, “I would like to reiterate what I said at the time, that the cause for the breakdown of the effort was Turkey`s persistence for the continuation of guarantees and in the presence of an increased number of occupying troops in relation to a proposal for a presence for a period of one military unit as was provided by the 1960 Treaty.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island`s northern third. Numerous rounds of talks under UN aegis to reunite the island under a federal roof failed to yield results.
