Coast Guard recovers three bodies off Chios after boat sinks

The Coast Guard recovered the bodies of three people in the sea southeast of the island of Chios on Tuesday after a boat filled with foreigners sank.

According to sources, the 27 foreign nationals aboard the boat called for help via the European emergency number 112, saying that their boat was in danger.

A major search-and-rescue operation by the Hellenic Coast Guard was underway in the area and 21 people have so far been rescued (13 men, seven women and a child).

The search and rescue operation involves an open water ship and two Greek coast guard vessels, a super puma helicopter, a Greek army helicopter, a NATO ship, three fishing vessels and three floating ships. Winds of 5 to 6 on the Beaufort scale are blowing in the area.
