No meeting between Mitsotakis and Erdogan scheduled, Gerapetritis says

State Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said on Monday in an interview with Skai TV that a no meeting has been scheduled between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York.
He explained that the Greek side has not asked for a meeting and as far as they are aware, the programmes of the two leaders do not coincide.
Asked if this may change, he replied: “Politics is dynamic, obviously the Greek side is not opposed to leaders meeting, having channels of communication is always a useful political route (…) channels of communication are always useful, with one condition: there must be a minimum common basis of understanding.”
“Provided that there is a mutual understanding that we are proceeding on the basis of International Law, which is a general, universal assumption, of course should meet,” Gerapetritis said, and clarified: “At the moment we are going through a phase of intense rhetorical aggression, but also generalised aggression on Turkey’s part.”
“It is something we will repel, as it must be repelled. We understand the importance of the alliances that are being built in Europe, even if this is considered by Turkey to be an aggressive move on the part of Greece. We take it for granted that the sovereignty, the sovereign rights of Greece will obviously continue to have full application on the basis of International Law.”
Asked if Greece is ready to deal with additional tension, Gerapetritis underlined: “We are more prepared than ever, the Greek side, both in the field and in international diplomacy, has proven that it has the ability to have very fast reflexes. Our reaction will be based on respect for international law, where required, but on the other hand, without any concession regarding our rights.”
