A new 5.4 Richter earthquake shakes Crete on Tuesday

A new earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale was recorded at 07:48 on Tuesday morning with an epicentre 22 km southeast of Heraklion, Crete, according to Athens National Observatory’s Geodynamics Institute.

One man was killed and nine were injured after a 5.8 Richter earthquake in the same vicinity that shook the island of Crete on Monday morning.

Arkalochori homes sustained heavy damage and are unsafe. Armed Forces, volunteers and members of the Hellenic Red Cross set up a temporary tent camp.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to visit the area immediately after his return from Paris.
