Greece’s interregional role in Southeastern Europe was the focus of an address by President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Three Seas Initiative (3SI), opening in Sofia on Thursday.
The two-day forum focuses on high-level collaboration of the countries bordering the Adriatic, Baltic and Black Seas. It is the sixth time the forum convenes, hosted by President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev. The initiative includes 12 member countries and partners European Commission, Germany and the United States.
Each day includes a presidential panel dedicated to a different topic: “Road to smart development and comprehensive economic growth” (July 8) and “Three Seas Initiative: A path to stronger, united and competitive Europe” (July 9).
In her address, Sakellaropoulou said that Greece is at the crossroads of three continents, and works toward becoming a hub in the region for transport of goods, innovative technologies, and energy following the pandemic. The 3SI offers an additional platform of cooperation with its partners, she added, noting as well that Greece’s membership would allow the initiative to expand further south.
Sakellaropoulou was invited to Sofia by President Radev, who said the initiative could not be considered complete without Greece, and who also expressed appreciation for the excellent level of bilateral relations. There are further opportunities for expansion in the economy, investments, culture and security, he added.
Also attending the 3SI from Greece are Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister for Economic Diplomacy Constantine Fragogiannis, Greek Ambassador to Bulgaria Dimitrios Chronopoulos, and Greek Presidency Secretary General Vassilios Papadopoulos
