Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi visited the Kara Pepe refugee camp at the island of Lesvos on Saturday, where adverse weather flooded parts of the camp in recent days.

“The Kara Tepe camp was set up in a state of emergency, in September, following the devastating arson at Moria camp,” he noted. “We managed to accommodate all the homeless refugees after the fire, and the camp is in good condition, orderly and secure,” he added.

Any flooding problems are being dealt with, and the camp will be fully restored to its former condition in early 2021, said the minister.

However, Mitarachi stressed that the Kara Tepe camp will become obsolete in 2021, as there is a new facility being built at Mytilini, in collaboration with local authorities.

The new refugee accommodation facility will be a model structure, he noted, and is being constructed in cooperation with the European Union. It will fulfill all the requirements for “dignified living conditions” and will also be secure, as a facility serving the needs of asylum seekers should be,” he underlined.
