“We will not follow Turkey down this slippery slope,” Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said in an interview with ‘Real FM’ radio on Wednesday, stressing that the neighbouring country is driving things toward a steady escalation that will not have good results for either Greece, Turkey, or the wider region.
“Unfortunately, Turkey is not responding to the hand of friendship that our country is constantly extending,” Dendias said.
“We have an obligation to defend our national interests, our national sovereignty and to not allow Turkey to lead our relations to such a degree of escalation that we end up militarising any disagreement.”
“We are not going to militarise the crisis with Turkey. It is a trap that Turkey is setting for Greece: to move from the stage of lawfulness to the stage of actions of this kind. The militarisation of differences with Turkey will not lead to a solution, it will lead to a deterioration,” the foreign minister said, but stressed that “Greece retains all the rights to defend its national space.”
Dendias also stated that Greece is in negotiations regarding the delimitation of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with Italy and Egypt, while at some point the relevant discussions will also begin with Cyprus and resume with Albania.
