Greece and Austria signed a two-year concession agreement over 181 containers to be used as housing and medical units for refugees at Greek islands and the mainland.

Due to coronavirus social distancing measures, the agreement was signed on Tuesday seperately during a videoconference by Alternate Migration & Asylum Minister George Koumoutsakos and Austrian Migration Minister Karl Nehammer, attended by the corresponding country’s ambassador. The signing will be completed with the exhange of documents through the diplomatic mail service.

According to an announcement by the Greek Migration Ministry, Koumoutsakos and Austria’s ambassador to Greece will receive the delivery of the first group of containers at the Sindos railway station, Thessaloniki, at 14:00 on Thursday.

The containers will be then distributed to refugee facilities at eastern Aegean islands and the mainland, with priority given to the island of Samos where facilities were damaged during recent incidents with migrants.
