Yiannos Papantoniou and Stavroula Kourakou to be held in women’s wing at the Korydallos prison

Former minister Yiannos Papantoniou and his wife Stavroula Kourakou will be held in the women’s wing at Korydallos prison while they await trial, sources said on Wednesday. According to the plans made by Greek authorities, Kourakou will be held in a cell with other female inmates while Papantoniou will be held in the special wing set up for the members of 17N terror group. None of the convicted terrorists are still being held in the specific prison wing, which is now entirely empty.

According to sources, the former minister will be alone in his cell, while yard time in the special wing is at a different time from that of the general population of the prison.

Following their testimony on Tuesday, judicial authorities ordered that Papantoniou and his wife should be remanded in custody until they stand trial on charges of money laundering.

Papantoniou denied that he laundered 2.8 million euros in kickbacks for a contract to upgrade six Greek navy frigates, which was awarded in 2003 when he was at the helm of the defence ministry.
