Strong winds hit Greece: Problems to the ferry schedules, more than 30 calls in fire department

Strong winds of up to 9 Beaufort that hit Greece on Tuesday caused problems to the ferry schedules at different ports across the country.

In Piraeus, the Super jet Catamaran for Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, Folegandros, Ios, and Santorini (Thira) remained moored at the port, while the Diagoras ferry for Kavala, Limnos, Mytilene, Chios, Vathi, Fournoi, Aghios Kirikos and Patmos was also cancelled.

Other ferry trips to Rhodes, Chios and Kavala were also called off.

Authorities called on passengers to contact port officials and travel agents to find out whether their ferry will depart as scheduled.

The gale force winds also created problems for the transfer of refugees from Moria hotspot on Lesvos to Piraeus.

Migration Ministry authorities have begun transferring migrants who are applying for refugee status from Moria to the mainland in an effort to decongest the island hotspot.

Nearly 100 refugees expected to travel on “Nissos Samos” to Piraeus remained on board on Tuesday, while another 400 scheduled to leave Lesvos on Wednesday will have to wait until the weather improves.

In downtown Athens, the strong winds kept the fire department busy.

The fire department received 30 calls for help in Attica due to branches and trees being knocked over from the strong winds that hit the area. Earlier on Tuesday, the winds blew over a tree on Alexandras Avenue, creating minor traffic problems.
