New US Consul to Thessaloniki expresses great expectations for this year’s international fair

The new United States Consul in Thessaloniki, Gregory Pfleger, on Wednesday said he had great expectations from this year’s US participation in the 83rd Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), where it will be the honoured country.

In an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), Pfleger said there were more opportunities for US-Greek cooperation and called on Greeks to seize these opportunities and move forward.

He also spoke about the areas where bilateral cooperation could develop and expressed his certainty that a country like Greece can play a vital role in the Balkans.

Asked about the sectors where US investments could potentially be made, he replied: If you take a look at our pavilion, you will see that the issue of exploiting innovation focuses on technology, but the (central) idea is youth and the prospects for the future. The real question is where do you, the Greek people, see opportunities to cooperate and build a prosperous future together with the US and the American companies that are here.

In reply to a question about Alexandroupolis port, he said: “The importance of northern Greece, of Thessaloniki, and also of Alexandroupolis arises from the fact that this region has stood at the crossroads of the world for centuries.” He pointed out that the area provided connections to the Balkans, the Black Sea, Asia, north Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, meaning that it would continue to be of interest to the US for a long time.

On defence issues, he referred to his collegues at the US Embassy in Athens, adding that cooperation in security and defence with “our Greek partners” is at an extremely high level and is beneficial for both sides.
