FYROM to complete constitutional change based on provisions of agreement signed, says Pavlopoulos

Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos referred to three main national issues – relations with Turkey, the agreement with FYROM and the Cyprus issue – while declaring the start of the proceedings of the 1st International Conference of Expatriates of the Ionian Islands.

“We are pursuing friendship and good neighbourly relations and we are in favor of Turkey’s European perspective. This, however, presupposes Turkey’s sincere respect for the acquis communautaire – an integral part of which is the “NATURA 2000″ programme – and of all international law,” he said.

Finally, regarding the issue of Greece’s relations with FYROM and the ratification of its name, he noted that this “will be achieved after its constitutional change in accordance with the provisions of the agreement that has been signed. Here we are absolutely clear and absolutely frank. We strive for friendship, good neighbourliness and in practice prove that we are helping the perspective of joining NATO and the European Union. In this respect, however, there is an important prerequisite: The solution of the name issue in accordance with history and with international law. In order to do this – as we have made clear and acceptable to both the European Union and NATO and the United Nations – our neighbouring country must make the necessary changes to its legal order, and above all its Constitution.”
