EU reviewing the regional aid system, EU Commissioner Vestager says to Dragasakis

The European Commission is reviewing the system of regional aid to reform it, said European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager during her meeting on Thursday with Deputy Premier and Economy Minister Yiannis Dragasakis.

The Greek Minister raised the issue, noting the need the funds to be allocated not only according to per capita GDP but also on the basis of qualitative criteria as, for example, unemployment and the insularity, which reflect more clearly the needs and problems of each region.

The Commissioner said that the procedure has been already launched to reform and improve the system so that member-states may manage, always in close cooperation with the European Commission, resources in the best way, as they know needs best and can implement the most approriate interventions.

Vestager also expressed her statisfaction over the operation of the Greek Competition Committee and said that by the end of the year EU will issue a directive on the alignment of the enforcement of the rules of competition with the digital era and the addressing of unfair competition practices in EU.
