Kyriakos Mitsotakis to table a motion of censure against Tsipras over FYROM deal

Main opposition New Democracy intends to table a motion of censure against the government immediately after the vote on the omnibus bill for the prior actions, ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Thursday in parliament.
Mitsotakis called on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to convert this into a motion of confidence in his government.
In his speech, Mitsotakis referred extensively to the agreement with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) on the name issue and justified his decision: “National issues mainly concern the non-negotiable defence of the country’s interests.”
The government, without parliamentary legitimacy, is handling both the economy and national issues in a dangerous way, Mitsotakis told lawmakers. “Tsipras is about to sign an agreement and bind the country to a framework that will create a fait accompli. The combination of economic and national issues is not accidental, it is a conscious choice to distract attention from the issues of the economy … ” he added.
The agreement amounted to a serious retreat on national issues, Mitsotakis said, adding that “this is what the foreign factor wants; we want a solution, but that requires that Greece is strong.”
“My own priority and that of the party I lead is to contribute to the unity of the Greek people. We will not divide the Greeks in order to unite those in Skopje. Tsipras is about to sign an agreement in Prespes on Sunday, without having ascertained whether he is backed by the parliamentary majority and without the unanimous support of his cabinet. All this is unprecedented. I am obliged to exhaust every means provided by the Constitution to prevent this development. Although I asked Tsipras to ask for the legitimisation of the parliament, he refused. The reason is to continue the ‘immorality play’ with Panos Kammenos. I have to try to prevent this institutional derailment and the mortgaging of the country’s future. Since he lacks the people’s mandate and political legitimacy, ND will table a motion of no confidence,” Mitsotakis explained.
