Discussion on Greek debt will begin before the end of the programme, says Dombrovskis

Things with Greece are moving “in the right direction,” European Commission Vice president Valdis Dombrovskis commented on the sidelines of the ‘One Planet’ Climate Summit that began in Paris on Tuesday, predicting that the discussion on debt relief for Greece will begin before the end of the current programme.
“The discussion of the debt relief measures with a short-term and a medium- to long-term horizon will begin before the end of the programme,” Dombrovskis said.
In comments to Greek journalists broadcast by ERT, Greece’s public broadcaster, Dombrovskis said he was optimistic that there will be a swift conclusion of the third review and that primary surplus targets will be met. He noted that things were on the right track for the implementation of prior actions linked to the current review. “We see that Greece is meeting and even outperforming its fiscal targets and it seems about to meet the target for a 3.5percent of GDP primary surplus in 2017,” he said.
Dombrovskis said the Commission was seeing a strong focus and a very constructive stance on the part of the Greek government and noted that, in this context, it was likely that the third review will be concluded swiftly. Regarding Greece’s clear exit from the programme in August 2018, he said that the European partners will examine this issue after the conclusion of the review.
