Government sets up team to draft law on Greek diaspora education issues

The foreign and education ministries on Friday announced the formation of a team charged with drafting a legal framework for the education of Greece’s diaspora abroad, due to be ready by March this year.
Education, Research and Religions Deputy Minister Theodosis Pelegrinis told Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee for the Greek Diaspora that this was the first time the two ministries were collaborating to set up such a working team.
Services of both ministries will be equally represented in its composition. Participants on behalf of the education ministry will include the Educational Policy Institute and the Centre for the Greek Language.
Pelegrinis said that 9.0 million euros will be spent of Greek-language education abroad in 2016, of which 1.2 million euros will be for teachers’ salaries and 4-5 million euros will be for the bonus received by teachers stationed abroad.
