Turkish Cypriot journalist Şener Levent receives the ‘Doros Loizou prize’

The Turkish Cypriot journalist Şener Levent was awarded on Thursday evening the “Doros Loizou prize”, during an event, in Nicosia, organized by the Socialist EDEK party.

Receiving the prize from EDEK President Marinos Sizopoulos and honorary party leader Vasos Lyssarides, Levent expressed the wish “not to die before we witness the liberation of our country”. The recipient of the award, who is also a writer and publisher of the Turkish Cypriot daily “Afrika”, said he was above all Cypriot and addressed those present as “brothers”.

In his speech, Levent expressed his opposition to all foreign armies on the island, the presence of the British bases and the “Turkish occupation army which holds our country captive for 41 years”, as well as all racist and fanatic acts. He also said he disagreed with a bizonal solution, noting that he wishes to see “a unified country, not divided by borders”.

Sizopoulos said from his part that Levent was honored for his “political contribution, as well as his struggle in support of the Republic of Cyprus, our common homeland”.

He added that the party will spare no effort for a democratic solution to the Cyprus problem, that will safeguard the political and human rights of all Cypriots.

The event was also attended by the Minister of Education Costas Kadis, members of Turkish Cypriot organizations and the former leader of the Democratic Rally party and former MEP Yiannakis Matsis.

The prize is awarded in the memory of Doros Loizou, a Greek Cypriot poet and politician, who was assassinated in 1974, in a failed attempt against Lyssarides.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof, resumed last May.
