Turkish occupied municipalities urge Cameron to end Cyprus’ occupation

The Committee of Cyprus Occupied Municipalities is urging British Prime Minister David Cameron, to exercise influence and demand the immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops and settlers from Cyprus.

In a letter, delivered to 10 Downing Street on Tuesday and signed by Alexis Galanos, Mayor of Famagusta and President of the Committee, members unanimously urge the PM and the British government to press for the implementation of the resolutions adopted by the UN, the acquis communautaire and the decisions adopted by the EU regarding the Cyprus issue.

The Committee supports “the ongoing negotiations between the two communities towards the finding of a just, viable and functional solution for the Cyprus problem”.

It urges Cameron to “exercise influence and demand the immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops and settlers from Cyprus”.
It also promotes the adoption and implementation of more high policy Confidence Building Measures.

“Once more we ask for your support in our quest for peace, justice and the unification of Cyprus”, it adds.

The Committee emphasizes its commitment to work towards the achievement of a mutually accepted, just, viable and functional solution, respecting the international law, safeguarding the basic freedoms and the human rights respect for all Cypriot citizens.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof, resumed on May 15, this year.
