Minister of Defence highlights Cyprus’ upgraded geostrategic role

Cyprus` upgraded geostrategic role was highlighted by Minister of Defence Christoforos Fokaides in a speech he gave in Berlin in the framework of a conference organised by the European Defence Agency and the Eurodefense-Deutschland.

Speaking at the conference, Fokaides referred to the Cypriot government`s initiatives for the creation of strategic relations with countries of the Middle East, in order to address problems such as piracy, terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.

The Cypriot Minister also highlighted the new prospects in the field of energy in the Eastern Mediterranean after the discovery of significant amounts of hydrocarbon reserves.

This discovery, he said, could serve as a catalyst for the creation of peace and prosperity in the region, while serving in the direction of energy independence of Europe.

Turkey, he added, could participate in this endeavour, provided that it demonstrates sincere political will in order to give an end to the biggest historic and political anachronism in Europe today, which is the occupation of territory of one EU country (Cyprus) by a country aspiring to enter the EU (Turkey).
