Ανοιξε ο δρόμος για την εργοδότηση ανέργων Ελλήνων υπηκόων στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες μετά την έγκριση του μεταναστευτικού νομοσχεδίου από την αρμόδια Επιτροπή της Γερουσίας. Ο Πρόεδρος, Μπαράκ Ομπάμα, καλωσόρισε το βράδυ την  έγκριση του νομοσχεδίου, που αφορά στις μεταρρυθμίσεις σχετικά με το μεταναστευτικό, μια κίνηση που χαρακτήρισε ως σύμφωνη με τις αξίες που υποστηρίζει η κυβέρνηση και μια ευκαιρία να αναδιοργανωθεί το «κατεστραμμένο» σύστημα.

Στην ανακοίνωση του Λευκού Οίκου αναφέρεται ότι ο κ. Ομπάμα δήλωσε ότι “κανένα από τα μέλη της επιτροπής δεν πήρε ακριβώς ότι ήθελε, όπως ούτε και εγώ. Στο τέλος όμως οφείλουμε στον αμερικανικό λαό να φτάσουμε στο καλύτερο δυνατό αποτέλεσμα».

Statement by the President

I congratulate the Senate Judiciary Committee on completing its work on S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.   Thanks to the leadership of Chairman Leahy and a bipartisan group of eight Senators, the legislation that passed the Judiciary Committee with a strong bipartisan vote is largely consistent with the principles of commonsense reform I have proposed and meets the challenge of fixing our broken immigration system. The process for considering this legislation has been open and inclusive with multiple hearings, and more than a hundred amendments were considered and adopted, in many cases with bipartisan support.  I applaud the Committee members for their hard work, especially “Gang of Eight” members Senators Schumer, Durbin, Graham and Flake.  None of the Committee members got everything they wanted, and neither did I , but in the end, we all owe it to the American people to get the best possible result over the finish line.  I encourage the full Senate to bring this bipartisan bill to the floor at the at the earliest possible opportunity and remain hopeful that the amendment process will lead to further improvements.

Οπως είχε γράψει η εφημερίδα Greek News, ευκαιρίες σε άνεργους νέους Ελληνες υπηκόους να εργαστούν για διάστημα ενός έτους ανοίγει πρόνοια της νέας αμερικανικής μεταναστευτικής νομοθεσίας, που αυτή τη στιγμή συζητείται στην αρμόδια επιτροπή της Γερουσίας. Βάση τροπολογίας που κατέθεσε ο Γερουσιαστής Νέας Υόρκης Τσαρλς Σούμερ και υποστήριξε ο επικεφαλής των Ρεπουμπλικανών Lindsey Graham, δίνεται η δυνατότητα να έλθουν για εργασία στις ΗΠΑ ειδικευμένοι επιστήμονες, αλλά και δάσκαλοι ξένων γλωσσών, από χώρες των οποίων λιγότεροι από 5.000 υπήκοοι μετανάστευσαν πέρυσι στις ΗΠΑ. Μεταξύ των χωρών που πληρούν τα κριτήρια συμπεριλαμβάνονται η Ελλάδα και η Κύπρος.

Σύμφωνα με χθεσινή ανακοίνωση Τύπου της εταιρείας «Μανάτος και Μανάτος» της Ουάσιγκτον, ο πρόεδρος της άτυπης επιτροπής για Προσωρινή Απασχόληση Ελλήνων στην Αμερική, Θεόδωρος Σπυρόπουλος είπε ότι αν το νομοσχέδιο γίνει νόμος (χρειάζεται υπερψήφιση από τη Γερουσία αλλά και τη Βουλή) θα επιτρέψει Ελληνοαμερικανούς να απασχολήσουν μεγάλο αριθμό Ελλήνων υπηκόων στην Αμερική για ένα χρόνο. Ως μέρος της απασχόλησής τους θα χρειάζεται να προσφέρουν μερικώς τις υπηρεσίες τους στη διδασκαλία ελληνικής γλώσσας κι αυτό θα συμβάλλει στο να διατηρηθεί ζωντανή η ελληνική γλώσσα και κουλτούρα.

Αρχική επιδίωξη πάντως ήταν να διασφαλιστεί η παραμονή των υποψηφίων στις ΗΠΑ για διάστημα περισσότερο από δύο έτη, ώστε να καλύπτονται τα πάγια έξοδα του νεοφερμένου (αεροπορικά εισιτήρια και έξοδα εγκατάστασης), ενώ η εισήγηση του κ. Σπυρόπουλου ήταν για περισσότερα από 3 έτη.

Για τη νομοθεσία, που θα νομιμοποιήσει εκατομμύρια λαθρομετανάστες, συνεργάστηκαν 8 μέλη της Γερουσίας, μεταξύ αυτών κι ο φιλέλληνας Ρόμπερτ Μενέντεζ, ο οποίος εργάστηκε παρασκηνιακά για να περάσει η ευνοϊκή για τους Ελληνες και Κύπριους ρύθμιση.

Temporary Employment Of Greeks In America

Washington, DC, May 15, 2013 – “Unemployed young Greek citizens may have an opportunity to work for a year in America,” said Ted Spyropoulos, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on Temporary Employment of Greeks in America (TEGA). Yesterday, the U.S. Senate’s Judiciary Committee unanimously adopted the TEGA amendment to America’s immigration reform legislation. If it becomes law, it will allow Greek-Americans to employ large numbers of Greek citizens in America for a year.

As part of this employment, the Greek citizens will be required to provide some part-time tutoring of conversational Greek language. Spyropoulos said, “In addition to providing large numbers of unemployed Greek youth with a year’s income and work experience in America, this program can also contribute to keeping alive in America our Hellenic culture and language.”

Interest in amending America’s immigration reform legislation is extraordinarily high as evidenced by South Korea’s expenditure of $1.7 million on its lobby effort. TEGA’s victory was one of just 37 amendments adopted out of the 300 introduced and many more attempting to be introduced. Manatos & Manatos, the Washington public policy company that some years ago amended visa law to enable Greeks to come to America under the Visa Waiver program, organized TEGA and its lobby effort.

The Chairman of the Immigration Subcommittee Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) offered TEGA’s amendment and a Republican leader on the immigration issue, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), cosponsored it. A leading Greek-American and former Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor of New York, Dennis Mehiel, with the assistance of businessman and New York City mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis, were instrumental to Chairman Schumer’s support of this matter.

Participating on behalf of Archbishop Demetrios, Father Alex Karloutsos was also crucial to the effort. Manatos & Manatos’ intensive lobby effort included many significant Americans across the country including a friend and philhellene, former US Senator and Vice President during the Jimmy Carter Administration, Walter Mondale. He personally pressed the two senators on the Judiciary Committee from his state of Minnesota.

Spyropoulos is now inviting some leading Hellenes in America and Greece to join the Ad Hoc TEGA Committee and help make yesterday’s legislative success become American law. Spyropoulos said, “With the proper support, we are extremely confident that TEGA and Manatos & Manatos will be able to maintain our amendment through the rest of the legislative process, and we will change America’s visa law. It is the least we can do for the people of Greece and for the Greek-American community. They both need and deserve it.”
