Statement by the Secretary-General on Cyprus
I warmly welcome the finalisation of a joint communiqué today and the formal re-launch by the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Derviş Eroğlu, of fully fledged negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Note to Correspondents on the Secretary-General’s meeting with his Special Adviser on Cyprus
The Secretary-General was briefed today by his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr. Alexander Downer, on efforts undertaken in Cyprus towards a resumption of negotiations since the Secretary-General met with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders in New York in September.

Οι εξελίξεις σε Κύπρο (οικονομικό επίπεδο), κατεχόμενα και Τουρκία (πολιτικό επίπεδο), καθώς και το θέμα που δημιουργήθηκε με τον Αλεξάντερ Ντάουνερ και την πιθανότητα αποχώρησής του από τη θέση του ειδικού συμβούλου του Γενικού Γραμματέα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, φαίνεται να θέτουν «νέα εμπόδια» στις προσπάθειες-επιδιώξεις για επανέναρξη των διαπραγματεύσεων στο Κυπριακό μέσα στο φθινόπωρο.

Οι προθέσεις των Ηνωμένων Εθνών,για τα επόμενα βήματα στο Κυπριακό, αναμένεται να εκδηλωθούν με την καθιερωμένη -ανά έξι μήνες- έκθεση του γενικού γραμματέα για την ανανέωση της θητείας της Ειρηνευτικής Δύναμης στο νησί (ΟΥΝΦΙΚΥΠ), τον ερχόμενο Ιούλιο.
A Peace Maker, Downer he ain’t
